Mael'thaeras is a demon who is possessing the child the player rescued from Bloodmoon Island in Act 2. The only way to rescue the child is to find out her true name, which you can find out in the school in Arx.
Tell them her name (Iris) and she will be strong enough to kick the demon out of her body. This however results into a fight against Mael'thaeras and some fellow demons.
After the combar Iris thanks the player and says that she'll look for her cat.
